Mathematics
Montessori math materials are hands-on, enabling children to grasp abstract concepts like quantity, place value, and operations through concrete experiences. Montessori math is not about memorizing formulas or abstract rules; it is about building a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through hands-on experiences. This approach encourages exploration, problem solving, and a natural progression to more abstract thinking as children grow.
Key Skill Areas:
• Number recognition and sequencing
• Quantitative relationships
• Introduction to operations (addition, subtraction, etc.)
Activity Examples:
Linear Counting
- Sandpaper Numbers: Tracing to internalize number forms.
- Number Rods: Learning quantities from 1-10.
- Spindle Boxes: Practicing counting and reinforcing the concept of zero.
- Cards & Counters: Visualising odd & even numbers by arranging counters under numeral cards.
- Coloured Bead Stairs: Arranging coloured bead bars in ascending order to visually represent quantity and number sequencing.
- Teen Boards: Build numbers 11–19, understanding teens structure.
- Ten Boards: Form numbers 10–99, reinforcing place value.
Decimal System Introduction:
- Golden Beads: Understanding units, tens, hundreds, and thousands through hands-on manipulation of bead quantities.
- Bank Game: Practicing simple addition and subtraction using beads materials.
Operations:
- Addition and Subtraction Strip Boards: Colour-coded strips for hands-on practice with basic addition and subtraction facts.
- Bead Chains: Counting bead chains to explore multiples, skip counting, and early multiplication.
